The Figure Under Tension: Drawing a Body That Is Straining

The short answer

Drawing figures in tension is a problem of weight rather than of anatomy: a body straining against something has to send force somewhere and the drawing has to show where it goes, which is why the strain reads first in the neck, the hands, the feet and the set of the jaw, and only afterwards in whichever muscle group is doing the actual work.

Drawing figures in tension goes wrong at the same point almost every time, and the point is mechanical rather than anatomical. A body under strain is a system with force moving through it, and the drawing has to account for where that force enters, what resists it, and where it leaves. In weak drawings the force enters and then stops, which the eye reads instantly as costume rather than event.

This page is about the figure only: weight, balance, and the parts of the body that report effort. What the figure is straining against is a different subject and not a technical one.

Weight has to arrive somewhere

Start with the base of support and the mass above it.

A figure at rest keeps its centre of mass over its base, and the drawing feels settled. A figure under effort has taken the mass off centre and something is holding it there. That something is the first thing to draw and the thing beginners leave vague: a heel dug into a floorboard, a hip against a wall, a shoulder loaded into an iron arm, as in the lighthouse signal. Draw the contact hard. Show the shoe compressing and the shoulder flattening where it meets the metal. Contact points are where a drawing proves the figure has weight.

If you cannot say out loud where the force is going, the viewer cannot see it either.

Counterbalance, and the body as a lever

The second mechanical fact is that a body pulling one way extends the other way to compensate. That is not a stylistic flourish, and its absence is what makes a drawing look staged.

Pull the hands back behind the line of the spine and the ribcage lifts while the hips travel forward. Push down through one leg and the opposite shoulder drops as the head tilts back toward the loaded side.

Two consequences follow. The spine under effort is rarely a smooth arc; it is a shallow S with one segment doing most of the bending. And the head is almost never square to the shoulders, since a level head on a straining body reads as inert.

The line of action, the single curve that describes what the figure is doing, should run from the point of resistance through the body to the point of effort. If it carries out the far side into whatever is being strained against, the picture has direction. If it stops at the shoulders, the picture has a pose.

Readers do not check biceps. They check the places where effort is impossible to fake.

The neck is the loudest. The cord running from behind the ear down to the collarbone stands out sharply under exertion or held breath, and the hollow above the collarbone deepens. A neck drawn as a smooth column reads as relaxed whatever the rest of the body is doing.

Hands come next, and they are the tell that survives being drawn small. A hand under effort is never open and never gently curled. It is a fist with a white knuckle, a hook with the fingers pulled in at the middle joint, or splayed hard with the tendons showing. The thumb is diagnostic: clamped in a real grip, drifting loose in a decorative one.

The jaw sets, the small muscle at the temple tightens, the mouth closes because effort is usually taken with the breath held, and the brows come down rather than up. Feet report as clearly as hands and are drawn carelessly far more often: toes grip, the arch loads, the heel lifts.

Then there is the free diagram nobody uses. Cloth pulls into tension folds that radiate from the point of stress and point straight back at the source of the pull. Get the folds right and the fabric tells the whole force story without a single anatomical line. Draw soft drapery on a figure under load and no muscle definition rescues it.

The distinction that matters here is between a figure exerting force and a figure arranged for someone outside the frame, and it reduces to four questions you can either answer or not.

Where does the force enter the body, and where does it leave. An exerting figure has a path. An arranged figure has a silhouette.

Is the balance precarious. Effort is unstable by definition, since a stable body is not working. An arranged figure is usually in a position that could be held for several minutes, which is why it reads as held rather than happening.

Does the pose open the body toward the viewer more than the mechanics require. A figure fighting a load turns toward the load. When the chest, hips and face all present outward instead, something has overruled the physics, and readers detect the override without being able to name it. Where the implied camera stands is the companion question, taken up in drawing agency.

Could you describe the figure with a verb. Bracing, hauling, twisting, resisting, timing. If the only honest description is an adjective, there is no event in the drawing, and no amount of finish will put one there.

Gesture is the test

Do a thirty second gesture drawing of your own finished figure, with no reference to anything else. Six or eight lines, no contour, no detail.

If the gesture comes out as a line of action with a direction, the figure is doing something and the rendering on top of it is decoration over sound structure. If it comes out as a shape you can only trace rather than summarise, the figure underneath was arranged. The same principle is why the plates on this site are worked out as gesture before anything else exists: the strongest contour in she cuts the rope runs from a braced foot to a working hand, and in nobody is coming it runs from a boot heel on a nail up into a pair of hands.

Why do my straining figures look like they are posing?

Usually because the whole body is pulling in one direction. Real effort produces counterbalance: pull one way and something else extends the other way to keep the mass over its support. A figure leaning entirely into the pull has no opposing mass, so it reads as arranged rather than working.

Where should the tension be visible first?

In the extremities and the neck. Hands are the loudest tell, since a hooked or splayed hand cannot be misread. The cord running down the side of the neck rises with effort or held breath. Feet come next, with the toes gripping and the heel lifted. The large muscles report last and least clearly.

Is there a quick test on a finished drawing?

Take the restraint out. Erase it, or cover it with a thumb, and look at what is left. A figure that still reads as a person applying force to something was drawn as a figure. A figure that turns into a shape with no direction in it was never drawn at all, and the restraint was carrying the picture.
